The Electronic Text Centre at UNB Libraries is a vital part of the University of New Brunswick Libraries' commitment to enhancing research, teaching, and resource management for scholars and students. A recognized leader in electronic scholarly communications, humanities computing, and digital libraries, the Centre is a collaborative and interdisciplinary enterprise undertaking initiatives that advance technologies in these domains. The Electronic Text Centre at UNB Libraries has supported the distribution of academic journals in digitized formats since its inception in 1996.

Costing for this support is worked out with each individual journal depending on the journal’s requirements. Journals choose from a menu of four production models:

  • hosting of the Open Journal System (OJS) for journal management;
  • hosting and XML light markup based on an industry standard data model;
  • hosting and XML detailed markup;

Costs range from $500 to $1,800 per year, a cost based on two issues per year (and with $500 being the minimum for site maintenance, alone). Back catalog digitization is supported, and the Centre has been digitizing back catalogues for several journals.

A collaborative relationship with academic journal editors is a fundamental feature of journal workflows. Editors maintain control over key decisions such as levels of access and subscription bases; editors can also select multiple access points through disseminating with a number of other aggregating services.

Finally, a major component of the Atlantic Synergies node’s regional governance structure is a Technical Committee and Journal Advisory Committee, the main directive of which is to identify ways academic journals can take advantage of the infrastructure Synergies was funded to build. These committees encourage regional journal participation, and focus on best practices (business plans and publishing models), open access, and copyright, among other issues.
